How Awana Works

Awana is made up of many components, each as flexible as you need to fit your church and community.
The Curriculum
Awana helps you build a family discipleship strategy for ages 2-18 with the following core curriculum components.
Picture
Puggles (2-3 years)
Puggles teaches toddlers basic truths about God and equips parents to practically reinforce these truths throughout the week.
T&T (3-4 Grade)

T&T takes students on a journey by answering their questions about God and the Bible while guiding them to grow in Christ’s love and live out their faith.
Cubbies (Pre-K)

Cubbies displays the greatness of God's character to preschoolers who are constantly asking questions!
Trek (Middle School)

Trek invites students to wrestle with the three questions they are facing: "Who am I, why am I here, and who's with me?"
Sparks (K-2 Grade)

Sparks ignites a child’s curiosity to learn about the people and events of the Bible, building a foundation of wisdom for knowing Christ.
Journey (High School)

Journey illustrates what is really expected of a follower of Jesus and mobilizes students to impact the world for Christ.

Philosophy

We believe that the sweet spot of discipleship happens at the intersection of highly relational and highly scriptural. Awana calls this The Great Connection. This disciple-making approach is at the core of every Awana program.
Structure

While Awana programs are adaptable and flexible to fit the size of your church’s volunteer force, building and budget, most Awana programs have some things in common. The program usually runs for one and a half to two hours and involves a rotation through three segments:

Large Group - a time for a Bible lesson, worship, recognition, skits, or anything else that would bring growth as a whole.
Small Group - a time for discipleship, individual prayer and requests shared, and Scripture memory.
Activity Time - a time to have lots of fun and for leader to encourage and get to know their students in a different environment. This is a great way for a small group to cheer on their teammates and work together- whether through games, crafts, puzzles, or team building activities. If you don't have a lot of space you can fill the activity time with games that don't take as much space, crafts, and other options. Just make it fun and interesting for your kids.
Cost

For around 8 months of Scripture-rich discipleship, the cost can be as low as $11 per child. This includes curriculum and incentives, but you choose what items best fit into your children’s ministry.

Building Your Team

Determining Who You Need
Assembling a team of volunteers is a critical part of establishing your Awana ministry. On average, Awana volunteers spend 1.5-2 hours each week serving kids. Depending on the size of your club and the resources available to you, the number of leaders or volunteers you need will vary. Your program could be as simple as you and two small group leaders, or as complex as 100+ volunteers with varying responsibilities and roles. No matter where you fall on that spectrum, Awana can still work for you.
Start Small
  • Ministry Director
  • Small Group Leader for each age group

That's it! Small Group Leaders keep track of their kids progress. You and the Small Group leaders can lead Game Time and rotate who teaches the Large Group Lessons.
More People...
  • Ministry Director
  • Small Group Leaders
  • Program Directors
  • Secretary
  • Game Director
  • Large Group Director
This model spreads out the workload and allows people to focus on one thing. If you have the people, this is a great option!
Growing Bigger?
  • Ministry Director
  • Small Group Leaders
  • Program Directors for each age group
  • Secretary

Program Directors oversee other leaders, teach Large Group Time, and plan Game Time. The secretary can handle all record-keeping and administration for the club.
Large Awana Club

  • Small Group Leaders
  • Program Directors
  • Secretary
  • Game Director
  • Large Group Director
  • Check-In/Security Team

Uniforms & Awards

Uniforms and awards fulfill several purposes for both leaders and kids. Uniforms help to foster a sense of belonging, and awards give kids a sense of accomplishment. Both encourage kids to be a part and inspire them on in their Scripture learning.  Of course, both of these are flexible to serve your purpose in the church. There are options you can use instead of these if you so choose. We'd be happy to talk with you about them.
Training

We’re here for you, every step of the way. Awana offers many leader resources that will make starting and maintaining an Awana ministry at your church easy and effective. Additionally, Awana provides specialized training and support with access to Field Staff that serve local churches, as well as local training events.
